What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the percentage of 10th grade students passing the mathematics portion of the California High School Exit Exam. |
| Why this is important: The purpose of the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) is to ensure that high school graduates can demonstrate grade level competency in reading, writing, and mathematics. All California public school students except eligible students with disabilities must satisfy the CAHSEE requirement in order to receive a high school diploma. Students are required to take the CAHSEE for the first time in grade ten; students who do not pass one or both parts of the exam have subsequent opportunities to re-take the exam prior to graduation. The CAHSEE has two parts: English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics. The mathematics part of the CAHSEE addresses state standards in grades six and seven and Algebra I. Individuals who do not finish high school are more likely than people who finish high school to lack the basic skills required to function in an increasingly complicated job market and society. Adults with limited education levels are more likely to be unemployed, on government assistance, or involved in crime. |
| Technical Note: The distribution is based on data from 57 California counties.Test scores are unavailable in counties where 10 or fewer students were tested. |
