What is this Indicator? This indicator shows the annual primary and secondary syphilis incidence rate in cases per 100,000 population.
Why this is important: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease (STD)
caused by a bacterium called Treponema pallidum. Syphilis can also be
passed from mother to infant during pregnancy causing a disease called
congenital syphilis.
In 2008, 13,500 cases of primary and secondary syphilis were reported in the United States, a 17.7 percent increase from 2007. The rate of primary & secondary syphilis in the United States was 18.4% higher in 2008 than in 2007. Primary and secondary syphilis rates have been increasing each year since 2000. In 2008, 63% of the reported primary and secondary syphilis cases in the US were among men who have sex with men, but syphilis among heterosexuals is an emerging problem.
The Healthy People 2010 national health target is to reduce the primary and secondary syphilis incidence rate to 0.2 cases per 100,000 population.
Technical note: The distribution for the gauge is based on data from 36 California counties. Rates were not calculated for counties reporting 0 syphilis cases. |
