What is this Indicator? This indicator shows the percentage of 12 to 17 year-olds who are not current smokers.
Why this is important: Health behavior patterns formed in adolescence play a crucial role in health throughout life. Those who start smoking young are more likely to have a long-term addiction to nicotine than people who start smoking later in life, putting them at greater risk for smoking-related illness and death. Tobacco is the agent most responsible for avoidable illness and death in America today. Approximately one-third of all tobacco users in this country will die prematurely because of their dependence on tobacco.
