| Description |
This intervention targeted children with moderate to severe asthma living in damp council housing. Local housing officers carried out an initial assessment of the home and recorded type of heating, presence of dampness or mold, and type of insulation. A theoretical energy rating was calculated. An asthma respiratory symptom questionnaire was also completed. Following this initial assessment, the housing officer proposed an intervention to improve the heating and measures to reduce dampness and mold growth within the house. Funds were available to carry out the necessary improvements. A repeat assessment was conducted at least 3 months following housing improvements. |
| Goal / Mission |
This goal of this study was to reduce pediatric asthma-related symptoms by reducing the amount of dampness and mold in the home. |
| Results / Accomplishments |
There was a significant improvement in a theoretical energy rating measure (p<0.001). A significant decrease in asthma-related symptoms including cough by day and night and wheeze by day and night was observed following housing improvements (p<0.001). There was also a significant decrease in days lost from school in the last 3 months before and after installation of central heating (p<0.001). |
