Ranking Effective Practice
Description The goal of the Coalition to Reduce HIV in Broward County is to increase awareness of the HIV problem and decrease incidence of sexually transmitted infections among 18-39 year olds in the African-American, Caribbean, and Hispanic communities.

The Coalition conducted a community needs assessment from 1999-2000 and then designed a multilevel, multi-sector, and multi-phased intervention in order to enhance the essential services provided by the Broward County Health Department. Intervention activities included: HIV/AIDS education outreach sessions, various culturally competent resident-focused HIV/AIDS outreach activities, training of community volunteers in HIV prevention, and providing HIV prevention supplies to the target population.
Goal / Mission The goal of the Coalition to Reduce HIV in Broward County is to increase awareness of the HIV problem and decrease incidence of sexually transmitted infections.
Results / Accomplishments Among the project's target population, sex without a condom declined from 26.3% in 2001 to 21.5% in 2005. In addition, use of a condom at least once in the past year increased from 51.8% in 2001 to 65.8% in 2005 among the Caribbean population.
