Description The Community Nursing Program, one of Parkview Health System's community health initiatives, supports nurses providing services in understaffed areas of the community. The nursing team includes asthma and diabetes specialists, and serves school districts, social service agencies, and other community health collaborators.
Goal / Mission This initiative strives to alleviate nursing shortages in underserved areas.
Results / Accomplishments Since 1998, Parkview has funded nurses in public schools with the greatest health needs. Following the success of this first initiative, Parkview expanded the effort to other schools and programs, such as Montessori preschools, HeadStart programs, and the Minority Health Coalition.

The Community Nursing Program's collaborative efforts have resulted in many positive outcomes, including its school-based flu vaccination initiative. The program vaccinated as many as 71% of eligible children, compared to a national average of 18%, and provided 99.5% of second doses to children who required them, compared to a national average of 23%.
