Ranking Good Idea
Description The integrated watershed management initiative is a innovative approach to address environmental issues subnationally, at the local resource level. Initiated in 1993, it creates a partnership between NGOs , government agencies and communities to maintain quality resources and find effective solutions for water resource problems associated with increased residential development, over-use of limited water supplies; pollution from widely dispersed sources like stormwater, agricultural run off and inadequate sewer systems.
Goal / Mission Addressing environmental issues on a watershed basis requires the cooperation and participation of many different people. This initiative aims to facilitate partnerships between state agencies, NGOs and civil society in order to yield better environmental results.
Results / Accomplishments As a result of this initiative, the State of Massachusetts has begun operating on a state wide watershed approach with strong NGO partnerships. More than forty NGO groups are part of the Massachusetts Watershed Coalition, working in partnership with subnational and national agencies to implement this Initiative.
