Description The most severe challenge confronting our broken and divided world in the 21st century is how to achieve sustainable development that benefits both man and nature. To secure more than sporadic prosperity and environmental protection requires a long-term perspective that focuses on the next generation. The hope for humanity lies in preparing the children of the world to be creative and cooperative to ensure sustainable development. A unique contribution in this respect can be made by the arts because the arts can be an essential element in the nurturing of children's creativity, a delightful medium to develop bonds with nature, and a powerful catalyst for environmental protection and cooperation.

Every four years ICAF launches an Arts Olympiad, the world's most prestigious and popular arts program for children. The Arts Olympiad starts in classrooms with project-based learning that leads to an art competition on a universal theme. It then leads to art exhibitions in the schools and communities worldwide and to national, regional and international children's festivals. Based on the Peace Through Art Methodology, developed by ICAF and the Center for the Study of Mind and Human Interaction at University of Virginia, ICAF's festivals develop bonds among the children by starting with the environment, a concern common to all children. After such bonding has taken place the children are exposed to conflict resolution and peace leadership training, so they can learn how to work together and cooperate to achieve common goals.
Goal / Mission The goal of this program is to prepare the children of the world to be creative and cooperative to ensure sustainable development.
Results / Accomplishments Nearly one million children created artworks under ICAF's 1st Arts Olympiad (1996-1999), and more than a million participated in ICAF's 2nd Arts Olympiad (2000-2003). Children, teachers, and parents from 50 countries participated in ICAF's 1999 festival, and the 2003 festival had representatives from 70 countries. The ICAF festival model has been replicated in twelve countries already and many more are expected to host festivals based on this model in 2005/2006.
