| Description |
Metropolitan Housing and CDC (MHCDC) is a non-profit, faith-based organization that develops safe, sanitary, affordable single- and multi-family housing as well needs-appropriate housing for seniors, survivors of domestic violence, HIV/AIDS patients and their families, and people with handicaps. Metropolitan was born out of a need for increased homeownership, improved rental housing, and appropriate housing for residents with special needs in our communities. More specifically, MHCDC was formed as a direct response to the community's need to combat deteriorating housing, homelessness, substance abuse, and increasing crime and unemployment rates. |

The mission of this program is to improve the quality of life for low-income persons through systematic and sustainable community development efforts. |
| Results / Accomplishments |
Over the past 12 years, MHCDC has developed more than 500 units of safe, sanitary, affordable single- and multi-family housing. An MHCDC-developed partnership will produce 150 more homes, with a large component reserved for low-income residents, by using proceeds from the sale of some of the upscale housing developed as part of the same project to finance affordable housing for others. In addition to the development and sale of single-family units, MHCDC has developed rental units for low- to moderate-income tenants and apartments for low-income elderly residents and others with special needs.
The vision of MHCDC has been emulated in many communities. They have assisted 30 churches in obtaining funding for various projects. Recently, a Leadership Conference was hosted to teach representatives from the faith-based and secular agencies how to implement their vision in their communities. Support from the Duke Endowment has allowed Metropolitan to build partnerships with area churches, other non-profits, and social service agencies to provide emergency assistance, food, shelter, and other human service needs. |
