This indicator shows the percentage of households owning one or more vehicles.
Why is this important?
Vehicle ownership is directly related to individual ability to travel. Vehicles allow households to better access jobs and essential local services such as supermarkets, doctors' offices, and hospitals. However, overdependence on vehicles contributes to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Air pollutants are known factors in respiratory disease and chronic illnesses such as asthma, as well as cardiovascular disease and mortality. In addition, a higher level of personal vehicle driving is associated with increased traffic accidents and fatalities.
